Suicide Prevention: 4 hours. This course draws on most recent data on federal and state suicides and focuses on the dynamics that lead inmates to commit suicide. The workshop emphasizes the characteristics of those inmates who commit suicide and the identification, intervention, and prevention of suicides in a correctional setting. The best correctional practices in suicide prevention are addressed by exploring the role that mental illness, substance abuse, impulsivity and anger factor in suicides. Focus is placed on manipulative suicidal ideations vs. legitimate suicidal ideations and how to discriminate between both in order to select best intervention practice. Warning signs, vs. suicide risk vs. protective factors will be addressed.
